College is expensive, but there are definitely ways to offset the financial burden and not accrue that dreaded college debt! Your first step is to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or (FAFSA). Then, spend some time perusing the following sites:

  • December 1, 2023- UT Tyler Merit $2,000 Scholarship All Texas students in the top 25% of their class are automatically eligible. Must be accepted to UT Tyler by Dec 1st.

  • April 1, 2024 - Kailee Mills Foundation Scholarship Program is to educate teen drivers about seat belt safety through seat belt awareness, research, volunteerism, and leadership. Scholarship recipients deliver high levels of academic achievement, ambition, leadership, and a desire to make a difference. Up to $20,000- Online application.

  • April 1, 2024 - $1000 Peace Officers Memorial Foundation Scholarship - The program was instituted for funding higher education for Texas peace officers’ dependents.

  • April 1, 2024 John & Rheba Myers Scholarship of Communities Foundation of Texas Scholarship for FULL AMOUNT of TUITION and FEES for an academic year, with the ability to renew for a total of four years. For any student going to a 2-year or 4-year academic institution.

  • April 1, 2024 Northeast Texas County & District Clerks' Region VI $1,000 Scholarship Two scholarships will be awarded, and students attending a trade school, community college, or university can apply. Applications must be mailed.

  • April 1, 2024 - All-Pro Septic Education Empowerment Scholarship - $1000 - designed to empower and encourage graduating Quitman High School seniors as they embark on the next chapter of their educational journey. Open to students pursuing either a college degree or vocational training, reflecting our dedication to fostering diverse paths of learning.

  • April 4, 2024 Maxcine Nash Scholarship NEEDS Based Scholarship. Any student attending a trade school, junior college, or university may apply. Please submit application to Ms. Burton no later than April 2 to be reviewed.

  • April 5, 2024 Quitman Rotary Club-Lee Williams Service Above Self $1,500 Scholarship For students attending trade school, junior college, or university. Applications must be MAILED or EMAILED.

  • April 25, 2023 Wood County Junior Livestock Show Scholarship Click on the link and download the application to complete online and then print. Applications must be DELIVERED to the County Extension Office.

  • April 26, 2023 - L.W. Garrett Memorial Trust Scholarship - Please submit to the front office

  • April 26, 2024 Quitman Young Farmers Scholarship For current FFA Members whose parent/guardian is a current member of Quitman Young Farmers. Applications must be turned in to Mr. Lee by 3:30 pm.

  • April 26, 2024 2 Quitman/Lake Fork Kiwanis Club $2,000 Scholarship There will be 2-$2,000 scholarships awarded, applications should be DELIVERED or EMAILED, Applications must have a letter of recommendation from a current Quitman-Lake Fork Kiwanis Club Member.

  • April 26, 2024 - Quitman/Lake Fork Kiwanis Character Award Scholarship - $2000 - Applications should be HAND-DELIVERED or EMAILED per instructions on the application. Applications must have a letter of recommendation from a CURRENT QUITMAN/LAKE FORK KIWANIS CLUB MEMBER.

  • April 30, 2024 Masonic Children & Family Services of Texas $2,500 Scholarship Open to any student attending trade school, junior college, or a university.

May 2024

  • May 21, 2024 - $1,000 - B. Davis Scholarship - Student Award Search Aid - Submit online essay. Instructions can be found here.

June 2024

  • June 10, 2024 - $1000 Abbott and Fenner Scholarship Program - Students will submit an essay on the topic that appears on the scholarship page. Apply online.

Institutional Sponsored:

  • U.S. Air Force ROTC Offers scholarships for students wanting to enter college or a university right out of high school and participate in that school's Air Force ROTC program. After completion the student has the opportunity to accept a position as an Air Force Officer.

  • U.S. Navy ROTC Scholarship Program Offers scholarships for students wanting to enter college or a university right out of high school and participate in the U.S. Navy ROTC.

  • U.S. Marines Offers scholarships or students wanting to enter college or university right after high school and for active duty members.

  • If you are planning on applying to Tyler Junior College, their scholarship application is now available. TJC is also known for the prestigious Presidential Honors Program which gives you a competitive edge upon graduation.

  • Northeast Texas Community College is just up the road and is another affordable alternative if you're looking to commute. Check out their Financial Aid and Scholarships page here.

  • Texas A&M Commerce is a good fit for many of our students, and is located a little over an hour from Quitman. Find out more.

  • Stephen F. Austin State University is located 2 hours away and has one of the most beautiful campuses in the state! Check out their scholarship page here.

  • Smith-Hutson Scholarship (SFA University) - Will award approximately 20 scholarships valued at $70,000 ($17,500 per year). Please click here to apply. Deadline is February 28, 2018.

  • Information for scholarships for Texas State University, located in San Marcos, is available on their Scholarship site.

  • If you are looking to stay close to home, an often overlooked 4 year university, Texas College, located in North Tyler, is an NAIA private school which may be an affordable option.

  • Many of our students opt for the scholarship opportunities afforded at Texas A&M University. The TAMU University System has a network of 11 universities throughout the state.

  • The University of Texas at Austin's Texas Exes organization has scholarships available.

  • For information on costs and scholarships for East Texas Baptist University, see this link. ETBU is located approximately an hour east of Quitman and we've had several QHS alumni as graduates.

  • LeTourneau University, located in Longview, is surprisingly affordable and comparable to public schools with NEW scholarship opportunities. Check out their scholarship and financial aid opportunities.

  • Baylor University offers the Carr P. Collins Scholars Program. Collins Scholars are awarded a minimum of $5,200 their freshman year, renewable for three additional years. Deadline to apply is January 31st.

  • UT Tyler offers the Reach Higher Scholarship for first time freshman with a family income up to $80,000 a year and complete the FAFSA may qualify for this program. The scholarship covers all tuition and mandatory fees.

  • UT Tyler offers academic scholarships for Incoming Freshman. They offer other scholars for talent, alumni, future teachers, etc. Find more on their scholarship webpage.

  • University of Houston Cougar Promise - Free tuition to low-income families (students) who meet the income requirements.

Trade and Technical Schools:

If a traditional college or JuCo is not for you, think about trying a Vocational or Trade School. Begin by checking out this site, which lists the top ranked Vocational & Trade Institutions in Texas. These afford many opportunities - both cost and time-wise.
